Football with Middlesbrough FC Foundation
On Sunday, the sports field will be playing host to newly-promoted Middlesbrough FC’s MFC Foundation who will be holding two coaching sessions held by their professional coaches! The Foundation engages with more than 35,000 people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Working in four key themes; education, health, social inclusion and sport participation, the Foundation team is dedicated to raising aspirations across Teesside and beyond!
Old Skool Playground Games
For adults and kids. Chain Tag, Blocky, British Bulldog (although we called it Fox and Hounds where I came from but that's coz it was on the edge of the Cotswolds.) In fact, if you've got a favourite that you used to play we'll have facilitators to make it happen, and medics.
I recently left my son gobsmacked by demonstrating some of the BMX moves that I could still put off. 180 endos, riding backwards, endos using your foot, wheelies (naturally.) Quite frankly the younger generation has alot to learn. Let's put that right.
Handball would be the offspring if netball and football had a child. Combining many of the rules of netball, the goals of football, and a smaller ball which means you can catch and throw with one hand, Handball is a great team sport which is high in energy and high in fun.
Quite a scary hippo that. This hungry hippos is played with 4 children, 4 adults, 4 skateboards, 4 washing up bowls and loads of those 'ball pool' balls. We think you can imagine how it works, highly competitive and great fun.
As is traditional, Thirsk Falcons will run football games and training again this year but with a major upgrade in playing surface thanks to Queen Marys school, our neighbours, who are letting us use their sportsfield. Loads more space and no more irregular bounces. Happy days.
How could we not play Rounders? Such a good family game. Can you get to first base? Nor us. Of course very important to have a strong chucker, back stop and first base person. You can tell we are struggling writing this, can't you? Great family fun. Rounders. Good times.
That Game On Broomsticks®
After the success of last year we are going to be playing more of That Game On Broomsticks®. Bring your broom that you made last year, or make one in our Friday night workshop. You'll want to flight test it pronto, it might need some tweaking. Thankfully, still no call from Warner's legal team.
That game with a tennis ball on a string®
No-one takes that game with a tennis ball on a string® quite as seriously as we do. No-one dag nammit. To illustrate this last year we designed our own sets, had them fabricated out of heavy duty steel and had them powder coated pink. We still get phone calls asking where you can buy them from.
We're just making stuff up now, aren't we? An actually 'real thing' sock wrestling is much like wrestling but the aim is to remove your opponent's sock. Although when our Megan told me about it I thought it was more like sock puppet fighting in a mini wrestling ring, perhaps we'll do both. Probably not.
Deer Shed Mini Ramp
If you've been following us on Facebook you'll know we have built our own mini-ramp for July. Although it's not that mini, it's massive, and lethal. Well, it's NOT dangerous in itself, it is extremely well built. Should you decide to use it in conjunction with a plank of wood with wheels on it - very closely supervised, padded up, disclaimer signed of course - it's guaranteed 'fun' for teens :)
This is an Ultra Star 175g Sports Disc. The King of Frizbees. Our sheepdog will not entertain the idea of catching anything less, and red is his favourite. Ultimate is, as the name suggests, the ultimate team game, a cross between netball and American football played with a frizbee.
Viewed by a distant alien race from afar, us humans get up to some crazy pursuits. This would be one of those. Slacklining -
a haulage strap ratcheted between two trees or similar solid fixed objects for you to regularly
balance on until you reach proficiency.
Clearly Parkour (the transcendental state one can achieve by jumping over stuff) originally came to the fore in urban environments, turning them into playgrounds. We will have a rural take on it hopefully not involving puddles.
You are clearly insane, but every year we get asked by Lycra clad folks where they can go for a Sunday morning run. So this year we'll do you a route which takes in the wooded bits of Baldersby Park you won't have seen before. There's nothing we can do about people pointing though.
I'm rubbish at this. In fact, I'm rubbish at anything that has a high net, like Badminton. You can't be great at everything, can you? It's Rounders for me every time. You might be athletic enough for volleyball though, in which case it's a good job we're doing it!
Eight tons of play sand
We had tears in our eyes when we read out the long card number to pay for the play sand two years ago. The safest sand money can buy. Anyway that memory has now faded and although we have to move the sand pit this year, it's still an essential part of the Deer Shed Festival.
A sporty activity for the under 5s, Thirsk Toy Library very kindly lends us its soft play equipment every year for which we are very grateful. Probably a better bet for your under 5 than a soldering workshop this year.
